OUR STORY

Founded in 1969, Te Māhurehure Cultural Society Marae was opened in Rangi Mata-Rau (Point Chevalier), by descendants from Waimā Tuhirangi in the Hokianga, who were living away from home.

It represents a labour of love for the elders who first developed the marae and their life-long commitment to manaaki the thousands of people here in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland.

It all began with the purchase of land back in January 1969 for $29,000 (a bargain by today’s standards!) which took years of fundraising to pay off. Back then, it was used as a rugby club, with a dirt-floored practice shed (built on an old tip).

Overtime, it has expanded across generations and eras to become a smart, modern Marae with different whare and facilities – as the culmination of a long-held dream to create a gathering place to host whānau, public, professionals, tourists and visitors.
